Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) Six Senses Laamu launched #LaamafaruFestival2020 on 1 December, which the resort describes as a community driven social media campaign. It aims to empower the Laamu Atoll community using digital means to educate and inspire one another in a dire and uncertain time.

This is the fifth Laamafaru Fest organised by MUI, an initiative by Six Senses Laamu, which attempts to raise awareness about our underwater resources and how to protect them. It has brought thousands of people to pledge ‘Our Ocean – Safe and Protected’.

“We believe that this is a crucial time for us to adapt as a community and find new ways of coming together, educating each other and keeping marine conservation as a priority” explained Six Senses Laamu’s general manager, Marteyne van Well.

The campaign was launched on 1 Dec with a cool video made by L. Hithadhoo school. MUI’s head marine biologist Philippa Roe believes you need to be working with schools as they are at the core of all islands, and noted the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm.

“Thus, we invited every school in the atoll to feature as a highlight of this campaign through videos created of the students, by the students,” she said.

We hope we get to participate next year.
