MMPRC called it a “triumphant day” for the country when it won, once again, the world’s leading destination title and more at the World Travel Awards 2021. The announcement was made at the WTA 2021 virtual ceremony held on 16 December.

The Maldives competed against 18 destinations including the USA, Greece, Indonesia, Vietnam and Dubai.

Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed, head of MMPRC, expressed his gratitude towards all who voted for the Maldives and noted in a press statement that “the achievement is possible due to the concerted efforts of the Government of Maldives, the Ministry of Tourism, other authorities, associations, NGOs and all tourism sector stakeholders.”

He also observed the efforts of MMPRC’s employees in “maintaining destination presence, marketing the destination as a safe haven, promoting [Maldives] tourism products and [the country’s] unique geography and experiences which promoted travelers confidence towards the destination post COVID.”

The press statement states MMPRC carried out over 200 different marketing campaigns in 24 different markets this year. These include 109 marketing campaigns in 24 markets, 60 fairs and virtual events, 10 roadshows, 30 familiarisation trips.

The World Travel Awards, which was established in 1993, is the travel industry’s leading awards event.
