India has returned to top spot as the largest source market for tourists to the Maldives.
With 86,353 tourist arrivals as of 18 May, Indian holidaymakers represented a 13.2% market share, followed by the United Kingdom (82,325 tourists), Russia (62,545 tourists), Germany (56,058 tourists), and Italy (43,748 tourists).
The Maldives has become the beach vacation destination of choice for Indians over the past few years. Picking up its pre-pandemic growth trajectory, India became the top market for Maldives tourism in 2021 with 278,740 holidaymakers.
A total of 655,049 tourists have visited so far in 2022, up 51.1% from last year but still -7.7% below pre-pandemic levels. The average duration of stay was 8.3 days.
Arrivals in April was up 59% compared to the same period last year with 145,279 tourists visiting during the month. The United Kingdom was previously the top market with 80,102 holidaymakers as of 11 May.
There are currently 164 resorts, 659 hotels and guesthouses, and 150 safari vessels in operation across the country.
