The Visit Maldives Club (VMC), is launching a global sports fishing competition scheduled to take place in between April and May 2025. Visit Maldives Club (VMC) is an initiative spearheaded by the staff of Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), designed to strengthen the Maldivian tourism industry through engaging events to create a united tourism community that works together to elevate the Maldives as a top global destination.
Ahmed Saaif, president of Visit Maldives Club said, “This is a major event planned by the club for 2025. The tournament will help promote various sports tourism opportunities, such as sports fishing, in the Maldives. We wholeheartedly acknowledge the response and support we received from the industry and other institutions for the tournament. We greatly appreciate the support we have been receiving from the club members and the MMPRC management.”
The Burunu Boma Sports Fishing Tournament, officially launched on 20th December 2024 and is an exclusive tournament designed to attract international fishing enthusiasts and participants from the Maldives tourism industry. The tournament emphasises the “catch and release” method, ensuring the protection of our marine environs and underwater life while engaging in healthy and friendly competitive fishing.
Speaking about the Burunu Boma tournament, MMPRC’s CEO and MD Ibrahim Shiuree stated “I hope to see the day when the country will grow in the world of sports fishing. The competition is another step towards promoting sustainable fisheries and tourism initiatives. The Maldives has won the World’s ‘Leading Green Destination’ title for the first time and it is our mission to promote to the world the long-standing sustainable fishing practices of the Maldives. We hope that this event will attract international fishermen and make the country a prominent place for various fields of sports tourism.”
The tournament will highlight sustainable fishing practices, aligning with global conservation efforts and raising awareness among tourism professionals about responsible practices. Participants will be eligible to win prizes across various categories, with notable special recognition awarded for sustainable fishing efforts. The championship is endorsed by Ministry of Tourism (MOT), Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Visit Maldives, MATI, Maldives Association Of Travel Agents And Tour Operators (MATATO), National Hotel and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NHGAM), National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM), Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Corporation (MFORMPC) and Maldivian Red Crescent.
