Sun Island has been awarded the Green Key international ecolabel in recognition of the resort’s “efforts to develop an environment-friendly, sustainable and responsible business.”

Sun Island General Manager Abdulla Fathhey expressed gratitude to the heads of departments and staff at the resort “who have tirelessly worked hard to achieve this milestone.” He also thanked Dr Mahmood Shaugee, Aboobakur Qasim, Abdul Rasheed, and Ahmed Saeed.

The leading standard for excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operations in the tourism industry, the Green Key award has been bestowed on more than 3,200 hotels and other establishments in 65 countries. Tourism businesses with the Green Key certification must ensure that their premises adhere to strict criteria set by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education.

According to the Foundation, “the high environmental standards expected of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent audits.”

As part of its commitment to sustainability and environment-friendly practices, Sun Island’s famed botanical gardens produce a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are served in the resort’s restaurants.
