The Maldives is top of the list of favourite international destinations for Indian travellers, according to bookings data from the travel website Agoda.
Thailand and the United Arab Emirates are the next favourite vacation spots. Despite the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, domestic travel remained the top choice for Indian travellers.
In contrast to Indians seeking warmer climates, tourists from Southeast Asian nations such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines prefer destinations with cooler weather like the United Kingdom and the United States. France, Turkey, Germany and Switzerland are among the top destinations for all markets.
“For many regions, the Eid celebration this year marks the first time since the onset of the pandemic that Muslims are able to travel freely, reunite and celebrate following the easing of travel restrictions,” Agoda observed, citing both the festive season and pent-up demand as key factors for a surge in travel.
The Maldives has become the beach vacation destination of choice for Indians over the past few years. India was the top market for Maldives tourism in 2021 with 278,740 holidaymakers. The Maldives has welcomed 65,412 Indian tourists as of 27 April, representing a share of 11.7% as the second-largest source market.
