The Maldives is due to host the World Tourism Organisation’s principal annual events for the Asia and Pacific region from 14 to 16 June at the Crossroads and Paradise Island resorts.

The three events include the Joint Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UNWTO Commission for South Asia (CAP- CSA); a UNWTO Ministerial Roundtable on ‘Tourism Resilience through Innovation and Digitalisation in Asia and the Pacific’; and a UNWTO ‘Global Summit on Community-based Tourism.’

Representatives from UNWTO member states and affiliate members as well as from international and regional organisations will attend the annual commission meeting, which will be the first in-person gathering since 2019. The agenda for the 34th CAP- CSA joint meeting includes a presentation on the UNWTO Programme of Work for 2021-2022 and discussions related to the Asia-Pacific member states.

The events were organised in collaboration with the Maldives government as part of golden jubilee celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of tourism in the country.

“The theme for this summit aligns with the government’s efforts on diversification and linking tourism and its benefits to local island communities,” said Tourism Minister Dr Abdulla Mausoom. “This Summit will focus on areas of community-based tourism, such as agro-tourism, gastronomy tourism, eco-tourism which broadens and enhances the product base for the destination as they are fast becoming significant attractions for tourists.”

Participants and keynote speakers started arriving over the weekend.
