An outlet of the Authentic Maldives chain of boutique shops opened at the Crossroads multi-island leisure destination last week.
Genuine Maldivian-made products from more than 70 local suppliers are available at the new outlet.
“This initiative facilitates the means for local brands and manufacturers to showcase their products and gain market access in the local and international markets,” according to Crossroads.
An initiative of the economic development ministry’s Business Center Corporation, Authentic Maldives was launched in January 2020 with a duty-free shop at the Velana International Airport, showcasing creations of local craftsmen and entrepreneurs ranging from sweet delicacies to lacquer work. New stores later opened in Malé, Hulhumalé and the Kuda Villingili resort. According to the BCC, more than 180 local businesses have since earned more than MVR28 million (US$1.8 million) through Authentic Maldives.
Located in the Emboodhoo lagoon about 15 minutes from the capital and the international airport, Crossroads is home to SAii Lagoon Maldives, a five-star lifestyle retreat, and Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, the iconic music-themed brand’s first Maldivian property as well as The Marina, which includes diverse dining options, retail stores, wellness centres, water sports, diving, kids’ clubs, and a 30-berth yacht marina. The Maldives Discovery Centre dedicated to local culture, arts and craft and the Marine Discovery Centre dedicated to underwater ecosystems are also open to visitors. Construction is underway on the project’s third resort, which will be home to SO/ Maldives.
