A total of 131,764 tourists arrived in the Maldives in January, up 43 percent from the same period last year.

But arrivals remained below pre-pandemic levels as Chinese tourists – who comprised the top source market – have yet to return due to border closures. Some 151,552 arrivals were recorded in January 2019.

Russia was the top market with 24,464 tourists as of 2 February – representing a market share of 17 percent – followed by the UK with 14,276 holidaymakers. Last year’s top market India was third with 11,438 tourists.

Some 162 resorts, 633 hotels and guesthouses, and 146 safari vessels were in operation in January.
