Italy’s new flag carrier ITA Airways announced plans to launch scheduled flights to the Maldives on 17 December.

The direct flight from Rome to Malé will operate thrice-weekly during the winter holidays, the peak season for tourism in the Maldives. The number of flights will be reduced to twice a week from 23 January to 26 March.

Tickets went on sale earlier this month.

“ITA Airways expands its presence on the intercontinental market and over the Indian Ocean. The Company responds to customers’ strong demand for one of the most sought-after destinations in world tourism, the Maldives,” the airline said. “With the new Rome Fiumicino – Malé flight, ITA Airways reaches 8 intercontinental destinations, out of 63 destinations overall with 22 domestic and 33 international.”

Traditionally a top source market, Italy is the fourth largest market this year with 49,828 visitors as of 5 July.
